What Is Direct To Lung Vaping?

A clear UK guide to direct to lung vaping, the inhale technique, the devices it suits and why some UK vapers prefer it.

The Short Answer

DTL means inhaling vapour directly into your lungs in one smooth draw, like deep breathing.

Unlike MTL where you draw vapour to the mouth first, DTL goes straight to the lungs in a continuous inhale. The technique requires sub ohm devices with high airflow. DTL produces large clouds, intense flavour and uses much more e-liquid than MTL. Most DTL vapers use lower strength nicotine 3 to 6mg.

per day is the typical e-liquid consumption for DTL vapers

DTL is the cloud chasing style of vaping that produces big visible clouds. It is fundamentally different from MTL in technique, devices, e-liquid and nicotine strength. Most UK ex smokers do not start with DTL because the strength match for cigarettes is wrong. Experienced vapers and flavour focused users often migrate to it.

What makes DTL different from MTL

Four core differences shape the experience. The grid below covers each.

T

Inhale technique

Single smooth draw straight to lungs, like a deep breath. No mouth holding step.

✓ Core feature
P

High power devices

Sub ohm coils 0.15 to 0.5 ohms. Wattage 40 to 100W or higher.

✓ Hardware needs
A

Open airflow

DTL devices have wide open airflow that lets vapour pass smoothly to the lungs.

✓ Design
L

Lower nicotine

Larger vapour volume means more nicotine per puff. Most DTL vapers use 3 to 6mg.

✓ Strength match

Who DTL suits and who it does not

The table below covers the typical user matches.

User profile DTL fit
Recent ex smoker Poor. MTL almost always works better
Heavy nicotine user Poor. DTL low strength does not satisfy heavy users
Cloud chaser Excellent. DTL is the cloud production style
Flavour enthusiast Excellent. Sub ohm tanks produce intense flavour
Budget conscious vaper Poor. DTL uses much more e-liquid
Discreet workplace user Poor. Visible clouds attract attention

How to learn DTL technique

DTL is learned by adjusting MTL technique. Open the airflow fully on a DTL capable device. Take a smooth long draw straight to your lungs without holding in the mouth. The first attempts often produce coughing as smokers and MTL vapers are used to the two stage technique. After a few sessions, the muscle memory adjusts. Most UK DTL vapers learn the technique within a week.

Worth knowing

DTL devices use significantly more e-liquid than MTL. A DTL vaper might go through 10 to 15ml per day at sub ohm wattage. An MTL vaper on the same nicotine intake might use 2 to 4ml per day. The cost difference matters. Most DTL vapers use shortfills or longfills rather than 10ml bottles to manage costs. Budget at least double the e-liquid spend for DTL.

How to set up a DTL system properly

The checklist below covers what UK vape shop staff most often recommend.

DTL setup checklist

Use four or more of these for satisfying DTL vaping.

  • Pick a sub ohm tank or pod with low resistance coils
  • Use a mod or pod system that can deliver 40W or more
  • Choose 70/30 or higher VG e-liquid for cloud production
  • Lower nicotine to 3mg or 6mg to avoid overwhelming hit
  • Open the airflow fully when starting out
  • Match wattage to coil rating, not just maximum mod output

Switching from MTL to DTL

Many UK vapers move from MTL to DTL after 6 to 12 months. The transition involves buying new hardware, lowering nicotine strength and learning the new technique. The reverse path is also common as some DTL users return to MTL for cost or discretion reasons. Neither style is better. They suit different needs at different points in your vaping journey.

DTL works alongside MTL as the two main vape styles, which our our guide on what is mouth to lung vaping covers, plus our article on MTL vs DTL vaping explained explores the sub ohm style that defines DTL.

Frequently asked questions

Is DTL stronger than MTL?

Different feel. DTL uses lower nicotine but produces larger clouds and more intense flavour.

Can I use 20mg salts in a DTL device?

Not recommended. The high power plus high nicotine produces overwhelming hit and possible nausea.

Why does DTL use more e-liquid?

Higher wattage vaporises more e-liquid per puff. Larger clouds need more material.

Is DTL safer than MTL?

Both are significantly safer than smoking. DTL produces larger vapour volumes which means greater inhalation.

How long to learn DTL technique?

Most UK vapers adjust within a week of regular practice with the new style.
