The Short Answer

MTL is closer to smoking. DTL is bigger clouds and more vapour.

Mouth to lung means drawing vapour into the mouth first like a cigarette, holding briefly, then inhaling. Direct to lung means drawing straight into the lungs in a smooth open inhale. MTL devices are smaller, lower power and use higher nicotine. DTL devices are larger, higher power and use lower nicotine.

10-25W
is typical wattage for UK MTL devices
40-100W+

70%
of UK ex smokers prefer MTL because it mimics cigarettes

MTL versus DTL is the most important question for new UK vapers. The choice affects which device you buy, what e-liquid strength you use and how much you spend. Most ex smokers find MTL more familiar and effective. Cloud chasers and experienced users tend to prefer DTL.

Key differences between MTL and DTL

Four main differences shape the choice. The grid below covers each.

T

Inhale technique

MTL is two stage: mouth first, then lungs. DTL is single smooth draw straight to lungs.

✓ Different feel
P

Power and wattage

MTL devices run 10 to 25W. DTL devices typically run 40W and above with sub ohm coils.

✓ Big difference
N

Nicotine strength

MTL uses higher nicotine 10 to 20mg. DTL uses lower nicotine 3 to 6mg because of larger vapour volume.

✓ Critical difference
V

Vapour production

MTL produces small clouds similar to cigarettes. DTL produces large dense clouds.

✓ Visual difference

Which style suits you

The table below covers the typical user profiles for each style.

User type Recommended style
Recent ex smoker MTL. Most similar to cigarette experience
First time vaper MTL. Easier to learn and lower entry price
Heavy nicotine user MTL with salt nicotine 20mg
Cloud chaser DTL with high VG e-liquid
Discreet vaper at work MTL produces less visible vapour
Experienced flavour chaser DTL with shortfill e-liquid

Cost differences over time

MTL is significantly cheaper than DTL over time. MTL devices cost 15 to 60 pounds, MTL coils last 2 to 3 weeks and cost 2 to 4 pounds each. DTL devices cost 30 to 150 pounds, sub ohm coils burn out in 1 to 2 weeks and cost 3 to 5 pounds each. DTL also uses much more e-liquid because of larger vapour volume. Annual cost difference can be 200 to 400 pounds depending on use.

Worth knowing

Pod systems and many UK starter kits are MTL by default because they target ex smokers. Sub ohm tanks and high powered mods are DTL. Some modern devices offer adjustable airflow that can switch between MTL and DTL on the same coil. These hybrid devices are popular with UK vapers who want to experiment without buying two complete setups.

How to choose your style

Most new UK vapers find the choice clearer once they see the differences laid out. The checklist below covers what helps.

Style selection checklist

Use four or more of these to pick the right style.

  • Try MTL first if you have just quit smoking
  • Pick MTL if you want a discreet, cigarette like experience
  • Pick DTL if you want big clouds and intense flavour
  • Match nicotine strength to your style, not the other way round
  • Test in a UK vape shop where staff can show you both styles
  • Start with MTL even if you eventually want DTL, learn fundamentals first

Switching between styles over time

Many UK vapers start with MTL and gradually move to DTL as their preferences change. The transition involves changing devices, lowering nicotine strength and learning the new inhale technique. The reverse, going from DTL back to MTL, usually involves raising nicotine strength because of the smaller vapour volume. There is no right or wrong choice, only what suits your current preferences.

Each style has specific guides covering technique and devices, which our our guide to what is mouth to lung vaping explore in detail, plus our article on what is direct to lung vaping covers the high power sub ohm style for cloud focused vapers.

Frequently asked questions

Is MTL or DTL better for beginners?

MTL almost always. It is closer to smoking, easier to learn and significantly cheaper.

Can the same device do MTL and DTL?

Some adjustable devices can. Most are dedicated to one style for best performance.

Is DTL more harmful than MTL?

Both are significantly safer than smoking. DTL produces larger vapour volumes which means greater inhalation.

Can I use MTL e-liquid in a DTL device?

Technically yes but high nicotine in a DTL device produces an overwhelming hit and risk of nausea.

Do I need different coils for each style?

Yes. MTL uses higher resistance coils above 1 ohm. DTL uses sub ohm coils below 1 ohm.
