Why Is My Vape Not Working?
A clear UK guide to dead vape devices, the main causes that stop them working and the practical fixes most UK vapers can do at home.
A vape that has stopped working usually has a battery, charging or coil issue.
The most common causes are flat battery, damaged charging cable, faulty coil, locked button (5 click safety lock) or worn battery contacts. Most fixes are quick once you identify which it is. The light pattern, charging behaviour and how recently it last worked all give clues.
Dead vape is the worst case scenario for UK vapers. The fix can range from 30 seconds (charge it) to needing a replacement device. Knowing how to diagnose the cause helps you decide whether to fix it yourself, return it under warranty or buy a replacement. Most issues have simple solutions.
The main causes of dead vape devices
These four cover most situations. The grid below explains each.
Flat battery
Most common cause. Battery completely drained and needs charging.
⚠ Check firstLocked device
Many UK vapes have 5 click lock to prevent accidental firing. Pressing the button does nothing while locked.
⚠ Easy unlockCharging issue
Damaged USB-C cable, faulty port or broken charger means battery cannot recharge.
⚠ Test cableFaulty coil
Bad coil prevents firing on some devices that have automatic atomiser detection.
⚠ ReplaceHow to diagnose the cause
The table below covers the typical UK diagnosis pattern.
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| No light when button pressed | Flat battery, locked device or charging issue |
| Light flashes 5 times when fired | Device is locked, click 5 times to unlock |
| Light flashes other patterns | Check device manual for specific error code |
| Charging light not coming on | Cable damaged or charging port worn |
| Device works briefly then dies | Battery degraded, possible replacement needed |
| No response to any input | Possible firing chip failure, hardware issue |
The 5 click lock catches many users out
Most modern UK vape devices have a 5 click safety lock. Quickly pressing the button 5 times locks or unlocks the device. The feature prevents accidental firing in pockets but catches users out when the device seems unresponsive. Always try 5 clicks first before assuming bigger problems. The unlock click pattern is universal across most major UK vape brands including Smok, Vaporesso and Innokin.
Some UK vape devices need to be charged for at least 5 minutes before they show any signs of life when completely drained. If the charging light does not come on immediately, leave the device on charge for 10 to 15 minutes before deciding the charging is faulty. Lithium batteries protected by safety circuits may need this recovery time before responding.
How to fix dead vape devices
The checklist below covers what UK vape shop staff most often recommend.
Dead vape fix checklist
Use four or more of these to revive a dead device.
- Try 5 quick button presses to unlock if applicable
- Charge the device for at least 30 minutes before testing
- Try a different USB-C cable to rule out cable damage
- Try a different power source like phone charger or laptop
- Inspect the charging port for debris or damage
- Replace the coil if the device has automatic atomiser detection
When to seek warranty replacement
If your device has stopped working within the warranty period and simple fixes do not help, UK retailers usually replace defective devices. Bring the original receipt and the device. Common warranty issues include premature battery failure, charging port damage and firing chip faults. Some UK retailers offer extended warranties on premium devices. Devices outside warranty are typically cheaper to replace than repair.
Specific symptoms have their own troubleshooting paths, which our our guide on why is my vape lighting up but not hitting covers, plus our article on what is a vape battery explains the burnt taste issue that often appears just before failure.

Quickly press the firing button 5 times. This is the standard UK unlock pattern.
Should I replace or repair a dead vape?
