Why Is My Vape Bubbling?

A clear UK guide to vape bubbling, why it happens and the practical fixes that stop the gurgling sound for good.

The Short Answer

Bubbling means too much e-liquid is sitting in the coil chamber.

The liquid cannot vaporise fast enough so it pools and bubbles when you fire. The cause is usually overfilling, leaving the device upside down, vaping at too low wattage or a flooded coil. Most fixes are quick. Persistent bubbling usually means the coil needs reseating or replacing.

Bubbling is annoying rather than serious. The fix is usually quick. Knowing why it happens helps you avoid it in future. Most UK vapers experience bubbling at some point, particularly with new devices or after refilling.

Five common causes of bubbling

These five cover almost every bubbling situation. The grid below explains each.

O

Overfilled tank

Pouring e-liquid past the maximum line forces extra liquid into the coil chamber.

⚠ Most common
U

Stored upside down

Liquid pools in the coil when the device is left mouthpiece down for hours.

⚠ Storage issue
L

Low wattage

Too low power cannot vaporise e-liquid fast enough, leaving liquid to pool.

⚠ Settings
F

Flooded coil

After refilling without taking dry puffs first, excess liquid sits in the coil chamber.

Quick fixes that usually work

The table below covers what UK vape shop staff most often recommend.

Quick fix How to do it
Take 5 dry puffs without firing Inhale without pressing the button to draw out excess liquid
Fire briefly with airflow open 1 second pulse helps vaporise pooled liquid
Tip device into a tissue Mouthpiece down for a few seconds clears liquid through the airflow
Reseat the coil Unscrew, dry the threads, reinstall and prime again
Reduce e-liquid in tank Empty to halfway and try again, the issue often goes away

Why some devices bubble more than others

Pod systems with simple coil designs bubble less than complex sub ohm tanks because the design has fewer places for liquid to pool. High VG e-liquid bubbles less than thin high PG because it does not splash through the coil as easily. Older devices with worn seals leak liquid into the coil chamber and bubble more. Newer devices with good gaskets perform best on this front.

Worth knowing

Bubbling that produces e-liquid in your mouth (a phenomenon UK vapers call spitback) is similar but slightly different. Spitback is the symptom of a coil flooded enough to spit liquid through the airflow. Bubbling without spitback usually fixes with the simple steps above. Persistent spitback suggests a coil seal or wick problem that may need replacement.

How to prevent future bubbling

The checklist below covers what UK vape shop staff most often recommend.

Bubbling prevention checklist

Use four or more of these to stop bubbling before it starts.

  • Fill only to the maximum line on your tank
  • Store the device upright when not in use
  • Take a few dry puffs after refilling before firing
  • Match wattage to the coil rating
  • Replace coils when seals show wear
  • Use 70/30 VG/PG e-liquid in sub ohm tanks for less splashing

When bubbling means a bigger problem

Persistent bubbling that does not respond to simple fixes usually means a worn coil seal or flooded coil chamber that cannot recover. Some UK vapers try cleaning the coil but this rarely works long term. Replacement is usually the answer. Persistent bubbling with new coils suggests the device itself has a worn seal or threading. UK retailers can replace devices under warranty if the issue is hardware related.

Bubbling connects to other tank issues, which our our guide on why is my vape leaking explore in detail, plus our article on why is my vape spitting covers airflow settings that affect bubbling tendency.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my pod bubble after refilling?

Usually the coil chamber has filled with liquid. Take 5 dry puffs to clear it.

Can bubbling damage my vape?

Not directly but can cause spitback that affects flavour.

Does e-liquid type cause bubbling?

High PG bubbles more than high VG because it is thinner and splashes more.

Will higher wattage stop bubbling?

Within the coil rating yes. Higher wattage vaporises liquid faster.

Should I replace a bubbling coil?

If simple fixes do not work after 2 or 3 attempts, replacement usually fixes the issue.
